Preparing for the holidays can be exhausting and even more so as a care partner. We have put together a list of holiday tips for care partners and their loved ones with memory loss during the holidays. These tips will help you and your family focus on the joy of the season and relieve some stress.

National Family Caregiver Month & National Alzheimer's Awareness Month

Here is how you can support a caregiver for the month of November:

1. Raise awareness of family caregiver issues - 60% of caregivers are suffering with a chronic illness of their own and 31% of caregivers a suffering with depression.

2. Give appreciation for all that they do - celebrate the efforts of family caregivers by saying thank you

3. Increase support for family caregivers - offer to sit in with their loved one even for just an hour so that the caregiver get's a chance to do a self-care activity

4. Reduce feelings of isolation - meet the caregiver where they are! Go over to their house, take their favorite dessert & sit down to have a conversation or coffee.

Here is how you can support caregivers at The ARK:

1. Volunteer at the Social Respite Program or the Early Memory Loss Program. These programs are designed to allow caregivers a break and time to themselves to practice self care. Our volunteers are vital to the success of this program. You can support family caregivers by volunteering for this program. The ARK is always looking for volunteers to share their time and talents with our participants. Our programs operate Monday-Friday. 2. Donate towards The ARK's scholarship fund. This scholarship fund helps cover the cost of the program for a family to receive respite. No one is turned away due to inability to pay. Scholarships are funded by grants & donations. Please consider a gift to our scholarship fund here.

November is National Family Caregiver Month & National Alzheimer's Awareness Month!

Caregiving Connects us – Community Strengthens Us

Being able to talk with someone else who understands your situation – really understands – can provide priceless support. When you can share your feelings, emotions and frustrations with someone who “gets it” your overall quality of life improves tremendously. Humans are social creatures, and the act of sharing our concerns is what bonds us to each other and allows us to work through our emotions. Talking to other caregivers gives you that support and understanding you’re looking for, so you feel less alone and better equipped to care for your loved one.

Strength comes from the community. Finding support helps caregivers feel empowered, resilient, and better able to provide loving, compassionate care. Peer support creates a sense of belonging, reminding caregivers that others truly understand their journey. Shared wisdom eases the burden. From coping strategies to daily care tips, connecting with others provides practical, real-world solutions.

Family Caregivers play a vital role in the healthcare system by enabling their loved ones to stay at home longer, leading to improved happiness and wellbeing. This not only reduces the strain on formal healthcare services but also fosters a sense of comfort and familiarity for the individuals receiving care.

Mission Statement:

The ARK of SC provides hope and relief to families living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. The program allows caregivers a much needed break from caregiving responsibilities. The care receivers are able to socialize with one another in a program of social activities tailored to their needs in a loving and caring atmosphere of complete acceptance.

The Philanthropy Officer is responsible for fundraising efforts related to: Building External Relationships, Raising Awareness, Increasing Funding, Sustaining and Developing Programs. This position includes securing major and planned gifts from individual donors, including unrestricted annual gifts, designated gifts for projects and programs and planned gift commitments. Manage a portfolio of high profile, high-capacity donors as well as securing sponsorships for the annual fundraising events. This position will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting donor prospects and securing annual unrestricted gifts, special gifts and planned gifts.

REQUIRED Experience, Education, Skills, and Knowledge:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and proven experience in major gifts acquisitions, individual fundraising, a legal, financial, or related field, with direct experience in cultivation and solicitation of individuals
Proven experience in creating, implementing & growing major & planned giving strategies
Established experience with managing and growing a portfolio of major donors and prospects
Demonstrated ability to generate funds through development campaigns and fundraising
Capability to deal with individuals from various backgrounds including clients and personnel
Demonstrated ability to quickly establish and maintain effective rapport in community networks
Able to work comfortably and professionally with a diverse group of people including but not limited to: donors, foundations, advisors, trustees, individual prospects and volunteers.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — The ARK of SC proudly announced that Executive Director Peg Lahmeyer received the prestigious Order of the Palmetto—South Carolina’s highest civilian honor—during the 15th annual Dancing with The ARK’s Stars event on May 10, 2025. Presented by the Governor, the award recognizes extraordinary lifetime service and contributions to the state, honoring Lahmeyer for her decades-long leadership supporting families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The surprise presentation left Lahmeyer—and the packed audience—deeply moved and inspired.

“Nominating Peg for the most prestigious award in South Carolina was the easiest thing I have done as a legislator,” said South Carolina House Representative Gary Brewer (District 114). “Peg is truly the most selfless person I have ever met, and not only am I lucky to have worked with her and the ARK—I am a better man because of it.”

“Receiving the Order of the Palmetto is an overwhelming honor that I accept with humility and gratitude,” said Peg Lahmeyer, executive director of The ARK. “This award is shared with my entire family, who have always been involved, and with the entire ARK team and Board of Directors from day one in 1996 through now. Our communities have wholeheartedly embraced and supported the mission. Thank you to Governor McMaster and the South Carolina House of Representatives and Senate for recognizing The ARK’s efforts in serving caregivers and families.”

The award was presented during The ARK’s signature fundraiser, Dancing with The ARK’s Stars, held at the Lowcountry Conference Center in Summerville. Now in its 15th year, the event brought together hundreds of supporters and local leaders for a spirited evening of dance, celebration, and purpose. The event raised over $250,000, making it the most successful in its history and directly supporting The ARK’s mission to provide critical services for families navigating Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Proceeds from Dancing with the ARK’s Stars support The ARK’s programs across five counties in South Carolina, including respite care, caregiver support groups, education, consultations, and rural outreach. The ARK continues to expand its impact, building compassionate communities that stand with caregivers every step of the way.

Russ Touchberry and his dance partner, Alina Spencer, took home the People's Choice award, with Russ raising over $59,000. Gretchen Cuddy and her dance partner, Anna McSwain, took home the Judges' Choice Award for their Charleston performance.

Innovative Resource Management returned as the presenting sponsor for the milestone 15th anniversary event, with the Lowcountry Conference Center serving as the venue sponsor. Guests enjoyed an evening of dance performances, heartfelt community support, and fun competition.

The 4th Annual Car Show presented by Palmetto Primary & Specialty Care Physicians on Saturday, March 29, 2025 was a tremendous success raising over $11,000 for families living with dementia in our community. Holiday Tips for Everyone Living with Dementia

Tips for the Person with Dementia:
1. Take some time out to relax.
2. Do what you enjoy.
3. Consider letting people know when you need a break or are having trouble.
4. Make a list with your partner of what you would like to do this season.
5. Use the list to help keep on track.
6. Consider saying - "I know I know you, but I just can't place you..." when someone greets you and you aren't sure who they are to you.
7. Watch or listen to old, familiar music, movies, TV programs that make you feel good.
8. Get some exercise every day.
9. Get plenty of water each day.
10. Be careful about too many sweets or treats.
11. Work the a partner to do familiar and fund activities (For example: Making, signing, mailing cards OR making up mixes with recipes to share with the family).

Tips for the Care Partner:
1. Keep gatherings smaller & visits shorter.
2. Offer time out.
3. Make a list of pleasures to do.
4. Encourage going out and doing something fun together rather than just talking.
5. Ask visitors to bring old pictures, old families items or props, and be prepared to reminisce about old times.
6. Take breaks from each other.
7. Consider cutting back on traditions if they seem distressing.
8. Help visitors out by introducing them with some orienting information, if they forget to do so
9. Get some exercise & take care of your stress levels.
10. Get a 'Friend' to help the person with dementia select gifts, shop, or do something special for loveds ones, including you!

Tips for the Visitor:
1. Start off by looking friendly and offering your hand in a handshake.
2. Introduce yourself by name, then PAUSE, if the person still doesn't seem to know you, give them a little more background.
3. Use shorter phrases and PAUSE between thoughts or ideas, giving the person a chance to respond.
4. Talk about the old times more than recent information.
5. Keep memories positive if possible.
6. Accept general comments, don't push for specifics.
7. Don't correct errors, go with the flow of the conversation.
8. Be prepared to hear old stories over and over, use old pictures or props to bring up other old memories... and laugh.
9. Do something with the person rather than just talking to them.
10. If the person says something distressing or seems worried about something, realize it may not be true, but they are not lying to you, their brain is lying to them. Check it out with the care partner before acting on it.

The program allows caregivers a much needed break from caregiving responsibilities. The care receivers are able to socialize with one another in a program of social activities tailored to their needs in a loving and caring atmosphere of complete acceptance.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent in experience) preferred
Experience working with seniors and those with ADRD and their caregivers
Proficiency in Google and Microsoft
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational skills; with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple initiatives simultaneously ensuring constant forward movement
Ability to keep the big picture in mind while also paying close attention to details
Ability to have calm and gracious composure at all times
Ability to represent the agency in a professional manner at all times

Duties and Responsibilities:

A strong commitment to our mission of providing opportunities for families living with

Alzheimer’s disease or related Dementia is essential

Communicate well with Executive Director on everyday operations
Assist with program as needed
Be kind, empathetic, and compassionate with the “members of The ARK Club” as well as the caregivers, volunteers, and staff
Receive and record all messages on phone log and direct calls as needed to staff members
Maintain all participant files
Tabulate incoming tuition payments, memorials, donations, grant funds, fundraising funds; Record on deposit detail and summary and make bank deposits; balance credit card statements with receipts
Print timesheets for hourly employees
Maintain roster of members of the Club, volunteers & transportation logs
Prepare and mail out acknowledgement and thank you letters to donors
Ensure monthly billing to caregivers and scholarship sources is timely, maintain billing data, scholarships, and grants use
Prep, set up the bi-monthly Board of Directors meetings; prepare the bi-monthly minutes during meetings and maintain board book and records
Multi-tasking throughout the year with multiple fundraisers (Dancing With The ARK’S Stars, Race for The ARK, Annual Fund Drive, and other events as developed)
Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories
Maintain office and program supplies; verifying receipt of supplies; lending library, resources, brochures etc. management
Assist NOAH staff with running copies for notebooks for the educational classes as needed
Be flexible to perform other responsibilities as needed by the Executive Director and other staff

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness Month

Join us as we recognize June as National Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness Month! This month is all about raising awareness of Alzheimer's Disease and learning how to maintain a healthy brain.

How to take action for Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness Month:
1. Join us in taking on the Hilarity for Charity's Brain Health Challenge for the month!
2. Start incorporating positive, everyday actions that can make a difference in brain health. Take a look at these 10 healthy Habits for your brain from The Alzheimer's Association.
3. The National Institute on Aging is raising awareness about Alzheimer's Disease among the Latino community. Throughout the month, they will be sharing information, research and resources on dementia, caregiving, and clinical trials in English and Spanish. Each week will focus on different topics related to Alzheimer's. Learn more here.
4. If you are worried about memory loss for yourself or a loved one, schedule a FREE memory screening with The ARK. This preliminary and educational test is intended to help facilitate a meaningful discussion between the patient and his/her doctor or qualified healthcare professional. Screenings typically take 15-20 minutes. The ARK is certified by The Alzheimer's Foundation of America to provide these screenings.

Support The ARK for Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness Month:
1. For the entire month of June, Rusty Bull Brewing (Downtown Charleston) is donating proceeds from their burger of the month! The burger of the month is the Hawaiian Volcano: two smash patties, pepper jack cheese, avocado puree, pineapple fritter, teriyaki and pepper relish piled on for a great cause.
2. Join us on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 for Pint Night at Rusty Bull Brewing (Downtown Charleston) where a $1 from each pint sold benefits The ARK!

Local Families Living with Alzheimer’s or Related Dementia to benefit from the

14th Annual Dancing with the ARK Stars Competition

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – The ARK of South Carolina will host its 14th annual Dancing with The ARK’s Stars fundraising event on May 11, 2024. A professional pilot, a principal and editor are among the local personalities trading their day jobs for dancing shoes to raise money for Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. The fundraiser, which pairs local personalities with professional dancers, will take place at Lowcountry Conference Center Summerville Hilton, 406 Sigma Dr., at 7 p.m. Tickets for the in-person event are selling out fast!

“We are so grateful to the dancers who take time away from their jobs, families, and personal time to help raise funds for The ARK of SC’s vital services in the Charleston area,” said Peg Lahmeyer, executive director of The ARK. “This event is integral to our fundraising success and allows us to help even more families as they care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or related dementia.”

Tickets are $95 each or $180 per couple in advance and will increase at the door. General admission tickets include an open bar, heavy hors d'oeuvres, dancing, and a silent auction bidder number. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cocktail attire is requested. Reserve your tickets online . There are many sponsorship levels that are tailored to meet the needs of all supporters. Proceeds from this premier fundraiser support the many programs of The ARK, which provides essential services for families with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. The ARK offers respite care, support groups, caregiver consultation, caregiver education workshops, resource referrals, law enforcement and first responder training, community learning programs, and rural services development. The organization serves five counties: Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, and Orangeburg.

Each dancer is teamed up with a professional dance partner, and the dancing duos will perform at the event for a chance to win one of two titles: the Judge’s Award or the People’s Choice Award, voted on by the audience.

Similar to the hit television show “Dancing with the Stars,” three couples will dance in each round, with the two couples receiving the most judges’ votes competing in a “dance off” to win the Judge’s Award. The couple receiving the most votes by dollars wins the mirror ball trophy for the People’s Choice Award. Votes are $10 each and can be cast in advance at TheARKofSC.org or the event.

Innovative Resource Management is the presenting sponsor. Dancing with The ARK’s Stars will be held at the Lowcountry Conference Center Summerville Hilton. As venue sponsor, with 15,000 square feet of ballroom space, the Lowcountry Convention Center is the largest convention facility in the Charleston metro area.

The 13th Annual Dancing with The ARK's Stars event was held in May 2023 and raised $105,000 with 450 audience members. Micheal Tupper and Charlene Mims took home the 2023 Mirror Ball Trophy for raising over $11,000. Priscilla Johnson and Melody Chabala won the 2023 Judges' Award for their dynamic swing performance.

The ARK of SC receives $3,000 from The Employees Community Fund of Boeing South Carolina

The ARK of SC is pleased to announce being a grant recipient of The Employees Community Fund of

Boeing South Carolina. Each year, Boeing employees not only go above and beyond by offering

hundreds of thousands of hours of volunteer work in the community but by giving back monetarily

with donations. The ARK was awarded $3,000 to support caregiver programming for the 2024 fiscal

year.

“We are incredibly thankful to have the support from the employees at Boeing South Carolina,” said

Peg Lahmeyer, Executive Director/ Co. “These funds will allow The ARK to continue to grow and

expand our services in the community.”

For over 28 years, The ARK has been a local nonprofit organization assisting families throughout five

counties (Dorchester, Berkeley, Charleston, Orangeburg and Colleton County) in the Lowcountry. The

ARK helps families cope with daily challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease or related dementia through

respite care, family support programs, caregiver consultations and educational classes. The ARK is

funded primarily by grants, donations and fundraising events.

Respite programs are offered in Summerville (Monday-Thursday) and in Harleyville (Wednesday) to

give family caregivers a much-needed break from the stress of around-the-clock caregiving. Support

groups, lunch & learn educational workshops, memory screenings, resource referrals, caregiver

workshops, and First Responder/Law Enforcement training are also offered.

It was a beautiful day in Santee, South Carolina at the Lake Marion Golf Course to raise awareness about The ARK. We had 15 teams participate in the tournament with awarding the top three teams with custom clay trophies. We cannot thank Vince Martin with Argos Cement and our sponsors enough for making t he annual Pull For The ARK a memorable event! Together, we raised over $11,000 to benefit The ARK of Harleyville, a satellite program for The ARK of SC .

They gave their time and efforts to help The ARK receive a $5,000 Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grant. The Allstate Foundation supports the causes that Allstate agency owners, financial specialists and employees care about most by providing Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grants to nonprofits where they volunteer their time to help communities thrive.

"We are thankful to have the continued support and generosity from our local Allstate representatives, '' said Peg Lahmeyer, executive director of The ARK. “Their volunteerism at the Race For The ARK has been very appreciated for the last five years”, Lahmeyer added.

For over 27 years, The ARK has been a local nonprofit organization assisting families throughout five counties (Dorchester, Berkeley, Charleston, Orangeburg and Colleton County) in the Lowcountry. The ARK helps families cope with daily challenges of memory loss through respite care, family support programs, caregiver consultations and educational classes.

Respite programs are offered in Summerville (Tuesday-Thursday) and in Harleyville (Wednesday) to give family caregivers a much-needed break from the stress of around-the-clock caregiving. We also offer an early memory loss program called the Navigation Club for community members who are experiencing early memory loss systems. Additional services include one virtual and four in person Support Groups and Lunch & Learn Educational workshops, Memory Screenings, Resource Referrals, Caregiver Workshops, and First Responder/Law Enforcement Training.

Local Celebrities helped raise $105,000 for Alzheimer's Program

On May 13, a community gathered to attend the 13th annual Dancing with The ARK’s Stars fundraising event, raising over $105,000 for The ARK, Alzheimer’s Family Support Services, during this especially critical time. Proceeds from this premier fundraiser support The ARK’s many programs and essential services for families experiencing Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.

"Our celebrity dancers did an exceptional job the night of and with their fundraising leading up to the event," says Allie Suber, Special Events Coordinator of The ARK. Each of them set a fundraising goal and went above and beyond. We cannot thank them and our professional dancers enough for stepping out of their comfort zone to not only fundraise for The ARK, but to take countless hours to rehearse for this big event!"

Six dancers were each paired with a professional dance partner from our sponsor, Ballroom Dance Charleston. The dancing duos performed at the event for a chance to win one of two titles: The Judge’s Award or The People’s Choice Award which was voted on by the audience. The evening started with opening numbers from La Quinn Mims and Company as well as La Combi Perfecta.

Michael Tupper, Owner of Mike’s Garage and professional dancer, Charlene Mims took home the 2023 Mirror Ball Trophy. Michael raised more than $11,000 for The ARK of SC. Prisicilla Johnson, Principal for Joseph Pye Elementary School and professional dancer, Melody Chabala took home the 2023 Judges' Award for their energetic Swing performance.

“It was a night to remember in Summerville'', says Peg Lahmeyer, executive director of The ARK. We are incredibly grateful for the community support and support from the celebrity and professional dancers this year.”

Since 2021, the Lowcountry Conference Center at Summerville’s Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites has been the venue sponsor. Plus, Ballroom Dance Charleston provided professional dancers, training, and rehearsal space for weeks leading up to the event.

Dorchester County Probate Judge, Mary Blunt was The Dancing with the ARK’s Star’s 2023 “Mirror Ball Sponsor.” This is Judge Blunt’s twelfth year as The ARK’s title sponsor in memory of her mother, Dr. Lidia Vallarino, who had Alzheimer's.

Mission Statement:

Investigates and pursues opportunities for new third-party events to benefit the agency
Recruits and supervises volunteers to assist in event implementation and other donor-related activities; to cultivate and nurture those relationships to promote future volunteer opportunities and potential donors

Russ Lloyd and Debbie Charles Housand took home the 2022 Mirror Ball Trophy. Russ raised a record breaking high of $67,179 for The ARK of SC in memory of his mother, Helen Lloyd. Dr. Alli Wimberly McCall and David Roland took home the 2022 Judges' Award for their beautiful Foxtrot performance.

A very special thank you to our celebrity dancers. This group did an outstanding job the night of and fundraising. This group collectively raised over $144,000 in votes. Thank you to all of our sponsors, professional dancers, board members, volunteers, staff members, & YOU! We cannot say it enough how much it means to us to have your support from each of you. Journey To Our New Van

We have some exciting news...

Last September, The ARK’s bus of 200,000 plus miles began having mechanical issues and by October it was out of commission. Since 2004, The ARK has been offering a transportation service to and from The ARK House to our families for care-receivers to attend our programs. Transportation is vital as some families do not have reliable transportation. The time on the bus extends the time the caregiver has to take care of themselves, keep medical appointments, enjoy time alone or with other family and friends.

“The ARK is the only Alzheimer’s social respite care in the area that provides transportation. Families are so grateful for the extended time it allows them as well as making it possible for their loved one to attend The ARK's programs”, said Peg Lahmeyer, executive director of The ARK of SC.

Over the last few months, community members stepped up to help on the journey of acquiring a new vehicle. This could not have been achieved without Doug McElveen taking The ARK under his wing and guiding us through the process. Funding was a concern when The ARK embarked on the journey, but thanks to the The Steady Hand Foundation, a matching gift of $13,000 was designated for the purchase of a vehicle.

A special thank you to Wayne Waters and his talented staff at Mr. Sign for designing and installing our new decals”, Lahmeyer states.

For 26 years, The ARK has been a local nonprofit organization assisting families throughout five counties (Dorchester, Berkeley, Charleston, Orangeburg and Colleton County) in the Lowcountry. The ARK helps families cope with daily challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease or related dementia through respite care, family support programs, caregiver consultations and educational classes. The ARK is funded primarily by grants, donations and fundraising events.

Respite programs are offered in Summerville (Monday-Thursday) and in Harleyville (Wednesday) to give family caregivers a much-needed break from the stress of around-the-clock caregiving. We also facilitate support groups, lunch & learn educational workshops, memory screenings, resource referrals, caregiver workshops, and First Responder/Law Enforcement training.
